Scribbles

Yr silver wisps of memory
Now dark matter
My father is off driving truckloads
Of salmon and trout
North till he hits south
Now it's hard to get this paradise
Out of mind
High beams flashing
Faking sleep in some
Rancher's ditch

Then yr middle aged
Staring at a psychiatrist
Her paperwork
Noisy storms.

in the great wake

watch three smokers huddled below
try to spot whales
instead see logs drift
helpless rotten black
they're kind of like what you imagine
the killer whale's tooth to look like
after years of swallowing oil
smoking cubans or something

watch the gulls flock
in the great wake
your cruise ship turns the ocean
into a highway
white caps streaming like
dividing lines
you've been seeing these white lines
everywhere for days
long waterfalls off mountains
and now even your beloved ocean seems
like one more strip of cement
try to think about nothing
use the gulls to clear your mind
see the dark one
he's got a ceiling hook instead of a beak
the fat one gets blown out of the wake
has to flap to keep up
the speckled one lets the wind
push him in circles
the dark one flies past
eyes like tapioca

then the city your leaving becomes miniature
the crane and the freights light up like a fairground
but a cloud of sulphur sits on top of it all
then it all starts to look like one big ugly stain
on a hard carpet

you cross the straight

a tugboat heaves.

I come home with fangs

I come home with fangs
black lines
that hang from my eyes
like ash that drifts
off the scarecrows at your father's farm.

It's nearly a full moon
your eyes have a mean glow
i haven't seen yet
the transformation is slow
as if the devil has been whispering
30 days of bad jokes
until you can't help but laugh
and throw one back

When I get home
there's skin growing over the crushed glass in your fist
my veil is in shreds
our voices drown each other
like engines stalled and dissonant
you fall asleep on the ocean
your arm off the bed
I try to lie flatter thinner than the sheet
you catch sea life in your gloved hand
and I clutch the sand on the ceiling

making long lists of things to blame you for until morning.

Waiting

Jane buries a bean under the porch
amongst the nail beds and rust mud.
That summer, heat is a curtain over everything.
Her parents paint the fence white again.
She waits for green, then digs it up, finds nothing.
She tells herself she spots some green dust.
She lays feathers to top the mound like a spell or a blanket.
Winter comes dark and wet.
The dirt on her knees becomes clay becomes glue.
Nothing moves.
Blood turns still and blue inside her legs.
She digs and digs and pulls up white roots like still born children crumpled in God's giant hand.

One night there is a loud clap of thunder.
The walls lean in and the baseboards shake.
The gleaming linoleum ripples.
The laminate splinters.
A beanstalk splits the living room in half
like a bamboo shoot it climbs over the chandelier
up and out the chimney.

In the morning no one talks.
Her parents hum and make wide eyes out the window
clench their coffee cups
pour Jane cereal with fresh milk

and wait for her to confess.

Huckleberry Burgers

I’m at my aunt dolores' trailer in Montana where the walls are covered with horses
I count twelve
some jump over barrels of hay
some are silouhettes on a mountain range
in the bathroom the soap dispenser is a ceramic horse
with goofy teeth and cartoon eyes

she just got back from Washington where
she tells me it’s blackberry season
here
they have a gas station that sells huckleberry burgers
she likes huckleberries
but she says blackberries make a better pie

she doesn’t have a horse of her own
she has a cat named shadow
who leaps through the window and she screams every time
outside there’s a saint bernard tied to a pole
howls like an angry wife every time a stranger drives by

she tells me there’s a man in her life
he’s an ugly brute with a golden tooth
tasting pine trees and taking swings
hopping greyhounds and sweating steam
getting drunk to the sound of the t.v.
fishermen’s manners
but he’s a steady pulse of heat.

she says,
“I get confused and start looking for love in all the wrong places. In between the cushions of seats. God help me if I’ve settled for spare change. I feel so lost I wish I could make like smoke and float up easy into that basin of everything that’s left."
Dolores whispers now,

"He doesn’t see me much anymore. Sometimes he comes over late, the saint bernard howls while I let him hold me. Me like a dense forest of trees coming up out of the reeds, leaves the shape of water lilies. "

My Fetters

too hard to mention
what is it that makes me feel
like chewed up rubber
glued to the roof

there is a cage
sometimes it is a wall
ceilings with stucco
like clouds that don't shift
single pane windows
that let in a draft

and i feel the cage in
open space
when I am resting in the green
pine carpet and birch wallpaper

i feel the cage at the theatre
the sounds of shoes on concrete
sound freer than my luxurious box seat

then there is the distillery
a factory my mind has formed
to filter pleasure from profanity
the vapours and droplets
are pure and translucent
but they show my face a smile

i am a thin wire
twisted
an antenna
a vessel
rust on a tugboat
bronze dust
a velcro lasso
a scuff on his chin
a carrier pigeon with nothing to say

and page
my greatest friend
you too
are just another box
to lock myself within
a coffin
where i lie
underground

to be found or to die

heaven

We passed serpentine river
it was a black velvet stretch of tarmac
it was my body recoiling.

I tell someone casually
that I believe in angels.
I'm not sure if I do,
but it seemed like
the right thing to say.
The lady who heard me
begins to talk about the
landscape of heaven
how sharp it will be
how similar to this
river valley,
green.

I just stare at her white veneers
think about all that venom
trapped in her gums
veins pink with
aspirin blood
son, a vulture circling
sizing her rings
while she kneels every night
thanking the Lord
for another day.

I close my eyes
to picture ink staining skin
your fist on my ear
or a sword in my hand
with ease she describes
how to hone pride
and haul mud from the driveway
just to prove her devotion.
She cuts down the tree
the children howl
now her voice
is a dial tone
static on the t.v.
and I play with my hem
just to seem deep in thought
when really my heart is
toiling
stuck like a clock
ticking too fast
legs navy blue
hands are in knots
and my dad's in the urn
and your body's absurd
and you make
death a dream,
a warm river valley,
green and sharp.

Things they pull up from the lake

A hubcap
when they see it from above the water
it looks like a sink full of blood
A skate with no blade, leather worn through
A blank record, a rotary phone, a milk crate.
The children watch
eyes like candles
cheeks like bees wax
fuel slowly burning
they'd hoped treasure
A dead man's jaw
or at least his gold tooth
when they peer down
not knowing what is there
they feel better.
The parents remind them
to shake confetti from their heads
they forget instantly
and run off clapping their hands like tambourines
against their sides.

Chase the hound (song)

If I laugh
like a crow
will you know that I am joking
If I cry
like a child
will you know that I am okay
And if I run
like my ma
will you know where I am going?

Watch the big black bird
chase the rabid hound
watch the sun rise up
to make fun of the shadows where we slept

Watch your gaze downcast
like a wasp trapped in a glass
because we can see it all
from this house upon a hill

But what good is it?
like a skinny wolf
catching mice between his teeth
it can't be enough

If I stay
like a log
will you build a fence around me?
If I break
like a vase
will you throw away the flowers?
If i hurt
like a tooth
will the dentist give you gold?

But what good is it?
like her skin pulled tight
like a breath held in
like yr lines rehearsed

So if I run
like your pa
will you fix the bike and follow me?
If I tempt
like naked eve
do you think God will forgive me?
If I scream
like lucifer
does that mean that he's in me?

fill my mind

the wind
is an angry friend
slamming doors
this morning.

I awake laughing.
A cay-ote
A jackel.

I scrub bruises off my knees
as if i were shining
a wax apple.

It seems right to press
black wounds
under my eyes
so that I may
find comfort in
my old disguise
but i rub the dangerous
ash out of my eyelids
I turn the stove high
pull it close
like a fire
even though
sparks are floating through
the window from outside.

I called you the devil
so that I could
live with the
red sky
and
ask you to stay alive

when we meet
time stretches
out between us like a
telephone wire
a crow stamps his feet
under my eyes
i had it written
down
better
somewhere else
but i feel
the same
somehow
because
it all
fills my mind
these
visions
of
your head
ducking low
under a weeping
willow
your hand
on cement
making a fist
your lips
making a joke
and your
heart like
a bruised shell
too soft to hold
itself.

Buttle Lake, Strathcona, B.C

shiver
adjust the pine boughs
listen for trucks passing
watch the wind push the rain
open and close the book
open and close your eyes
walk home
along the highway the
whole way

dreams here are
chalk and film
they are skin and bones
they are flesh and sinews
they are silver bands
they are empty land
they are holding onto necks too tight
they are voodoo dolls
made from sap and oil
twigs and human hair
they are taking a smouldering branch
and shoving it up my sleeve
they are drunk
they are grass and silk and soft things
they are near the ocean always
they carve caves out of cliffs
they are wood chopped in halves
they are white caps
and rapture
they are eyes turning wild
they are a fence around a waterfall
they are a shelf i've broken
just by touching it
they are painted white
they are a safe feeling gone
they are a basement below sand
they are boiling water on a stove
they are whispering tongues
and white angels crying then
dark angels laughing
they are rest and relief
they are the dirt under your nails
they are the same as yours.

here there is a body
lying low like water
everyone calls it
"beautiful",
"tropical",
"ocean",
but i see rust and a dam
a lake staying too still
for it's own good.
trunks of trees fall
from the sky
to crush hooves
brittle antlers tangle up
below my feet.

Signs that I'm Scared

-shutting the blinds so the neighbours don't see
-cleaning dust off the vcr
-your chair, 100 years old seems to mock me, even the chair has done more than me
-the name tag they gave me at the seminar [caged heart] how did they know me after one day of shaking
-reading james, trying to press it into my memory
-buying banana shampoo and brushing my hair before sleep, stepping carefully over the board that creaks
-today i look so much more alive than i've felt in so long

Some new songs

20,000 feet

i rose above
this city that's been lying to me
with it's cruel blanket of clouds

angry men floating
on their grey stomachs

muffling my sounds
strangling prayers

i thought i knew rain
but now i've seen
where it comes from

if i knew more about rosaries
i'd clutch prayer beads like
enemies
instead i listen to
tape running blank
hoping you'd make
one more sound

at take off
i see the carney faces
i see the ferris wheel
the bull dozers
cranes and
jerry cans
i see your mother
dumping fuel
i see the lions being
fed human arms
and the tigers
losing sleep
at take off i see the
islands at my feet
i see your worried
face
i see the eyes at the bottom of
the sea

above the clouds
there is a blue sky
a white sun
and a bird out of breath
descending slowly.

Hurse

keys in the air
madam's lip bleeds
twisted ankle
now she won't speak

this is the second fall

the first was on concrete
old man knocked his knee
cursed loudly
sat on the curb
told the crowd to leave

both made me think of the
dead blood in my feet

early bird

a bird sings
in the black sky
the moon
a yellow cat's eye.
i've spent the evening being swallowed,
growing old alone
and terrified
of seeing spirits
seeing skeletons
ignoring the gift
my mother and i share
of seeing past
your blinking eyes
holding our hands open,
i never tell you what I see
it would kill us both.

the bird whistles
"come here,
come here,
come here."

Eve

i've turned eden
into a landfill.

adam built a dugout
where cat tails grow tall
and the water is the
only mirror I've known
but I hate the reflection
so I sit on the mound
next to the pool
and throw ashes
until the dog barks
and flames grow,
this is the future.

my father fell in love
with not needing to
understand her,
happy to know
breasts
and she fell in love
with him trying to
learn her language
it seemed honest,
this is the past.

the dugout froze over
the wind pushed us across the ice
since then I expected to move
without lifting my legs
i don't know what i was waiting for
my teeth to turn yellow
my fists to shake
my belly to grow
something to boil up inside of me
for you to speak first,

i'm sorry for saying I was fine.

The song you never sing

Like yellow broom
An invasive crow
I marched right up
To your front door
With my selfish smile
You took me in
Like a baby
I screamed
Behind your back
You never knew you had to win me
My eyes so big
I couldn't let you see me cry
You had no chance to comfort me

I used to be the camas and the
Shore

But I stole your genius
While you broke my hands
And I should have been the one
To break your cigarettes
Before your yellow teeth
Turned black
Before you swallowed all your
Sweet chagrin
The same way you guzzle
Flasks of gin.

I used to be the camas
And the shore
The one waiting in your
Garden never feeling cold
But I was not the
Wrecking ball that could have
made you new
The night sky is still
Your comforter
While the sunlight shakes and
Pummels you.
